Two readers can pull the same cards, say nothing factually wrong, and give completely different readings. One is a recitation. The other changes how someone sees their week.
The difference is delivery, and it is a craft skill rather than an intuitive gift.
Structure
A reading that lands has a shape:
Open with the situation, not a card. "This is a spread about being tired of waiting" orients the querent immediately. Starting with "The first card is the Seven of Cups" makes them work.
Move through the middle at pace. Not every card needs equal time. The supporting cards are supporting; treat them as such.
Put the weight near the end. People remember the last thing they hear. If the centre of gravity is the Five of Pentacles in position eight, do not spend it in minute two and then trail off through three cards of context.
Stop. Do not fill silence with extra cards or extra qualifications.
Language
Say the hard thing plainly, then soften with context — not the reverse. "This looks like grief you have not finished" followed by explanation lands cleanly. Three sentences of hedging followed by the same claim lands as evasion.
Prefer descriptions to verdicts. "This reads like someone who has already decided" invites agreement or correction. "You have already decided" invites defensiveness.
Leave room to be wrong. "Does that match?" costs nothing and gives the querent authority over their own life. A reader who cannot be corrected is not reading — they are performing.
Avoid the passive-fatalist voice. "It is showing that difficulties may be approaching" says nothing. Who is doing what, to whom, and when?
The Last Line
End with one sentence the querent can carry out of the room.
Not a summary of the spread — they will not retain ten cards. One line, ideally in their language rather than the deck's, that names the thing the reading was actually about.
"You're not deciding whether to go. You're deciding whether you're allowed to want to."
That is the part they will still have next month. Everything else was scaffolding to get you both there.
