Justice

Justice

Major Arcana · Air · Libra

truth fairness law cause and effect accountability

Upright

Justice holds the scales and the sword with equal steadiness — she does not waver in the face of sentiment or fear. This card speaks of truth, of consequences arriving as earned, of fairness in all its forms. The universe is watching; all accounts will balance.

Reversed

Reversed, Justice warns of unfairness, of a system or person operating outside integrity. There may be bias, dishonesty, or an avoidance of accountability. You may need to examine your own truthfulness, or to acknowledge where judgment has been clouded.

Whatever has actually happened between you two is about to be named plainly, and this card favors that over managing the feelings around it. Fairness matters more here than comfort — say the true thing, even the version that doesn't flatter you.

Reversed

One side of this relationship has been carrying more than its fair share, or a truth is being avoided because naming it would require an accounting neither of you wants to do yet.

A decision made here will be judged on its merits, not on politics or charm — make sure the case you're presenting is actually as sound as you believe it to be. Documentation and plain dealing carry more weight now than persuasion does.

Reversed

Something unfair is happening at work — credit misassigned, a process that isn't applied evenly — and pretending not to notice won't make the imbalance settle on its own.

Cause and effect are close together here — what you've been doing to your body is showing up as what your body is now doing to you. Give it an honest accounting rather than another excuse for the gap between habit and result.

Reversed

You're avoiding a diagnosis or a hard truth about a habit's real cost, or judging your body more harshly than the actual facts warrant.

Karmic accounts are closing here — what you put out is returning to you in a form you can finally see clearly. This is not a punishing card; it's an honest one, and honesty is the practice it's asking for.

Reversed

You're either escaping accountability you actually owe, or holding yourself to a standard so severe it's stopped being fair. Justice, including toward yourself, requires proportion.

Yes or no

Yes, if you have been honest. If not, expect the accounting rather than the outcome you want.

Timing

When the account is settled, no sooner — this does not respond to being rushed or petitioned.

Advice

Be honest, including about the parts that don't flatter you. The accounting is happening regardless of whether you participate in it truthfully.

Reversed

Look for where you've been unfair, to someone else or to yourself, and correct it before the imbalance grows harder to fix.

The upright sword

Held straight up in her right hand, double-edged and unsheathed. Truth here cuts both ways — it will favor no one on the basis of sympathy alone.

The level scales

Balanced exactly, held in her left hand at rest. The verdict isn't in motion; the weighing has already happened by the time you see the card.

The purple veil behind the pillars

Fabric hung between two columns, matching the High Priestess's threshold but drawn differently — what's decided here has already crossed from hidden into declared.

Her square crown

A small, precise crown, geometric rather than ornate. Her authority is structural, not decorative — earned by the shape of the argument, not by status.

Her direct gaze

Facing forward, meeting the eyes of whoever draws the card, unlike most of the surrounding Major Arcana figures shown in profile. There is nowhere to hide from this one.

Number
Eleven collapses to two — a pair of scales, weighed until it settles into balance rather than staying suspended.

On the Tree

Justice is the twelfth path, Lamed, running from Geburah to Tiphareth — severity tempered by its passage into the heart of the Tree, force made accountable to conscience. Wherever it lands, it marks a position where an honest accounting is due, whether or not it's welcome. High on the Tree it is discernment applied without favor. Lower down, in Yesod or Malkuth, it means the outcome is a direct, traceable consequence of what came before it, not an accident and not negotiable.
