Meaning
Upright
The Hermit has climbed the mountain not to be alone but to hold his lamp for those still climbing below. This is a card of conscious withdrawal — of turning inward to find the answers that no one outside can give. The wisdom you seek lives in the quiet.
Reversed
Reversed, the Hermit has become isolated — the chosen solitude has calcified into loneliness or reclusiveness. There may be a refusal to accept guidance or share hard-won wisdom. It is time to come back down the mountain, lantern lit, ready to rejoin the world.
The Hermit in love, work, health & spirit
Love
Step back from this relationship long enough to hear your own thoughts about it without anyone else's voice in the room. What you actually want tends to go quiet under company; give it the silence it needs to speak clearly.
Reversed
Solitude has become avoidance — you're using distance to dodge a conversation the relationship actually needs, or you've isolated so completely that connection itself has started to feel unsafe.
Work
Take the project, or the decision, somewhere quiet before you bring it back to the group. Some answers only arrive in the absence of other opinions, and this is a card that rewards deliberate, private thinking time over another meeting.
Reversed
You've withdrawn past the point of usefulness — hoarding insight instead of sharing it, or so removed from the team that your guidance can't reach anyone anymore. It's time to come back down with what you found.
Health
Rest that is actually rest, not merely absence of activity — unplug, go quiet, let your nervous system settle without input. Your body has something to tell you that it cannot say over the noise of your ordinary schedule.
Reversed
Isolation that's tipped into unhealthy withdrawal, where the quiet has stopped restoring you and started to compound whatever's actually wrong. It may be time to let someone else in.
Spirit
The lantern he carries is old light, not a new idea — this is a card for returning to a practice that has already proven itself rather than searching for a fresh one. Withdraw from the noise of other people's paths long enough to find your own footing on yours.
Reversed
A spiritual withdrawal that's calcified into permanent removal from the people and practices that used to sustain you. Hard-won wisdom kept to yourself helps no one, including you.
Asking the card
Yes or no
Not until you've sat with it alone. Ask again once you've stopped consulting other people about it.
Timing
A period of withdrawal first, then movement — do not skip the solitude to get to the answer faster.
Advice
Go quiet before you decide. The clarity you're looking for is not going to arrive in a crowded room or a fast conversation — it needs the kind of solitude you've probably been avoiding.
Reversed
Come back down the mountain. Whatever you learned alone is meant to be brought back and shared, not kept as a private possession.
The Hermit on the Fool's Journey
Step 9 of 21 · The inner work
Having made peace with the beast, the Fool walks away from the crowd. The Hermit climbs alone with a lantern that lights only the next step, and the Fool learns the value of solitude — of withdrawing from other voices long enough to find their own. The answers here are not on anyone's map. The lesson is that wisdom is found, not given, and that the search is lonely by design. The Fool leaves carrying a small light of their own, enough to go further in.
Symbols on the card
- The lantern with the six-pointed star
- A hexagram, Solomon's seal, glowing inside the lamp he carries. The light he holds up is ancient wisdom, not a personal opinion he's improvised alone.
- The staff
- A single support planted firmly in the snow. He needs only one thing to keep his footing — not a crowd, not reassurance, just this.
- The grey robe
- Plain, unornamented cloth covering him fully. Nothing about his appearance is meant to attract attention; the point is to be overlooked, not admired.
- The mountain peak
- He stands above the treeline, alone, having climbed past where company was possible. The isolation is the cost of the vantage point, not a mistake.
Numerology
Nine is completion just before the return to one — the furthest a single-digit journey can go before it circles back.
The Hermit in each spread position

- 20 — Chesed to Tiphareth
On the Tree
The Hermit is the tenth path, Yod, running from Chesed to Tiphareth — mercy distilled down into the single, deliberate point of conscious identity. Wherever it lands, it marks a position reached only through withdrawal, a truth that could not have been found in company. High on the Tree it is wisdom earned through solitary discipline. Lower down, in Yesod or Malkuth, it means the outcome is still forming in private, and forcing it into the open before it's ready will cost more than the wait does.
Gnostic reading
The solitary gnostic with the lamp. Gnosis is unshareable in the end, and the Hermit is what that costs: a knowing that cannot be demonstrated, carried by someone who has stopped expecting to be believed.
Reversed
Light hoarded. The knower who has made a possession of what was given to be passed on, or who withdrew so far that the Call can no longer reach him either.
